One of the things you will need to think about before you get a sugar glider is how often you will be traveling away from home. If you are the kind of person who loves to take vacations or has to travel for work, having a sugar glider might not be easy for you.
Sugar gliders cannot be left unsupervised if you have to travel. That gives you two options to choose from. You can either find somebody to watch them for you, or you can bring them along with you. It is possible to travel with your sugar gliders, but there are some considerations you will have to evaluate first.
First of all, you have to consider how you will be traveling. If you will be flying, you will have to verify with the airline that sugar gliders are allowed in the cabin. It is not recommended to fly your sugar gliders as cargo. Some airlines will only allow sugar gliders in cargo, and in that case, you should seek another alternative.
There are some airlines that allow sugar gliders in the cabin, but they will be required to be in a carrier under the seat in front of you. Although it would be a lot easier to just carry your sugar glider in a pouch on your person, it is best to follow the airline’s rules because you do not want to get in trouble.
If you are traveling by road, then you can certainly bring your sugar gliders along. You will want to get a smaller travel cage and make sure it can be secured in the vehicle. You could also carry them in their bonding pouch on you if that is an option for you. That would probably be a smoother transition for your sugar gliders.
Some other things you will have to consider are whether you will be allowed to have your sugar glider at your destination. Make sure they are legal in the state where you will be traveling. If you will be staying in a hotel, make sure they will be permitted.
If you will be staying for an extended period of time, you will want to make sure there is somewhere your sugar gliders can have out of cage time. Being cooped up in a cage for too long is not good for them. Make sure there is a glider proofed area for them to play in.
If you cannot bring your sugar gliders with you when you travel, you will have to find somebody who is qualified to take care of them. You can either have that person come to your home, or you can take your sugar gliders to their home.
Of course it would be easier to keep your sugar gliders in their own environment because it would be less stressful for them. If you have to move them, go with them and spend some time in the new environment so they can get comfortable with it.
You should also have the new person wear a piece of fleece and tuck it into your sugar gliders’ pouch so they can get used to the new person’s scent.
You should make detailed list of instructions for the baby sitter and provide emergency contact numbers of veterinarians and anybody else who could help in an emergency.
If you have to travel a lot, it can be stressful for your gliders to be separated from you. This is especially true if you have a single glider. If your lifestyle includes traveling often, you may want to think about getting a different pet.
You said an airline, or some, allow Sugar Gliders in the cabin? Which airline is this??????? I have called a few and so far its a no go on them in the cabin
I flew on Frontier Airlines and they allowed me to have my glider in a carrier under the seat in the cabin.
I am looking for an airline that will let me bring my sugar glide with me on the plane. We called Frontier Airlines and they said she could not come with me. How did you get your glider to be allowed to come with you?
It was a couple years ago, but frontier did allow me to travel with my sugar glider in a carrier in the cabin. They may have changed their rules since then, but I would call and try to talk to a different person.
